How to Choose a Photography Print

Buying a print is easier when you start with the wall, not the catalog. Measure the usable space, decide how much visual weight the room needs, then choose a material that suits the light and the way the room is used.

Size

Measure the wall before choosing the print

Measure the open wall area, then account for nearby furniture, trim, switches, and anything else the print should not crowd. A single print usually feels more settled when it occupies roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture width below it.

Orientation

Let the available space narrow the options

Portrait work fits narrow walls and spaces between windows. Landscapes sit naturally above sofas, beds, desks, and consoles. Square prints are flexible on their own and easy to combine in a grid.

Material

Choose a finish that works with the room

Framed paper has a familiar gallery feel. Canvas adds texture without a separate frame. Metal and acrylic create a cleaner, more luminous finish, but their reflectivity matters in rooms with strong windows or direct lighting.

Placement

Check the view from where the room is used

Tape the outside dimensions on the wall and look at them from the doorway and the main seating position. This catches scale problems early and makes it easier to judge whether the image needs breathing room or a larger presence.
